The comments are from different viewers on the you tube and not of the author of this blog. However the discussions on the you tube are many a times educative as hard core fans of MMA puts their comments. Some comments might just be cain. However not all but selected comments and discussions have been posted.

Face it boxing is a dying sport and its going to stay dead.
MMA is were its at now you need more skill and guts to step in any MMA fight.

Skill in this matter means branded and violent.

In boxing there is a greater chance to get knocked out but no one hates it as much as MMA. Sure MMA might be brutish at times but hey some people love the skill involved in it and some like it cause they love seeing people beat the shit out of each other. So yeah go watch your bowling and swimming sports and shut up. I know for sure you wouldn't tell a MMA fighter they are brutes and insult the sport in front of them.

Have fun beating off to Joe Rogan while that "dead" sport continues to outperform anything MMA can even dream of.

ur confusing athleticism with sportsmanship
Tyson was one of the greatest athletes of all time and he lacked any form of sportsmanship (and sanity)
and they arent allowed to kick them in the head anymore so its not as brutal as u seem to think it is
besides they know the rules if they weren't okay with it they wouldn't get in the cage

"considering they are beating defenseless people on the ground?"

If someone is not intelligently defending himself, the ref stops the fight.

It's clear you know very little about MMA. If you don't want to take the time to properly educate yourself, don't even comment on the subject, as it makes you look silly.

my introduction to mixed martial arts was when i started to learn boxing as a little kid. i'm a huge boxing fan but lets face it, boxing is dying. their events are so boring compared to UFC. and ufc is real fighting. if i ever get in a street fight i do not rely on boxing, muay thai and especially brazilian jiu jitsu are much more effective in defending yourself. UFC and MMA in gerneal are the future of the combat sports, not boxing and this is coming from someone who loves boxing

but you should keep your boxing up it build coordination and has been said to have the strongest punch not to mention if also gives you good combination you should also try take elements from many different martial arts like kung fu taekwondo and on top of your mix martial arts it will make you a more better fighter i know it sounds lame but try be like batman and try to master as many martial arts as you can there are tons of techniques out there that can enhance your game

i started training when i was 16 but dam im training hard, did karate as a kid and doing muay thai now aswell as boxing and learning some submission arts... cant wait till i get into this when im 19 :D my goal in life atm... its just epic... 5 stars *****

the true master of mma is fedor emelianenko

Emelianenko=battle tested beast

There should be one event once a year where the top fighters go at it...he just might take it all

also just to let you know about the whole boxing is dead they are scare to let mike tyson in mma cause his boxing combine with his strength in a anything goes match he may kill someone and that coming from the actual organization

Best strategy is TKD .. foot sweeps and back and proper crescent kicks .. back off and let the opponent advance (has to open himself to counter-strike if he's advancing). Nice crescent kick or front snap. You have to do your stretches to have these in your arsenal. Constantly assess if you're in control - back up or front snap. Keep heel planted <<. These guys don't know their TKD (or they'd use it). I have to protect my opponent from really demo'ing himself - no overkill a la Tito. you´re kidding, right? TKD is a sport, not a martial art. you can find videos of TKD vs mma and they all end the same way: TKD guy misses a kick and the mma guy takes him to the ground, where TKD is useless. Splat blood over there face and fighter's face.... Don't tell me they can't get AIDS/HIV. UFC makes $2,000 per fighting. That's not real job either. How many UFC/MMA fighter made millions? WWE got twice more salary than UFC/MMA fighter. UFC/MMA are armature fighters aren't professional. It's dirty fight. lol and wrestlers are real fighters? they get those kind of salaries because stupid people go watch them.....its a fucken joke "WWE got twice more salary than UFC/MMA fighter. UFC/MMA are armature fighters aren't professional. It's dirty fight. " replace WWE with UFC, and that statement would be correct. Except WWE does pay more. As it is an entertainment program, not a real sport. οk then,go watch rey mysterio and the other actors of the wwe pretending to get hurt Wasted movements? Form training is just training you to be comfortable fighting strong side and weak side. Also meant for muscle memory with certain movements from your opponent. Also ground game is very overrated since you to get your opponent to the ground. Some guys don't want to fight on the ground so guess what happens they dont. Its understanding that decides fights. What your skills are and weakness and sticking to a planned attack.Styles have very little to do with actual fighting. Its smarts there r wasted movements its second only to capoeira in that department and no ground game is not over rated without it ur garbage plain and simple if u don't know how to defend against a take down or fight on the ground any high school jock will be able to whoop ur ass and smarts don't really help when u dont have time to think That's stupid! In the tough man competition where regular people fought for money a guy beat two football players that came originally to watch. Also many fights where the guys doesnt want to go to the ground they dont. herring vs noguria, cro crop vs yoshida, henderson vs gracie. The ground game is terrible overrated. Also im pretty sure anyone whos done full contact fighting understands distance and timing. Also when you don't think in a fight your just stupid and wont win.Machida vs ortiz(examples)

u mentioned gracie didn't u?
look royce did to every striker in the early ufc he destroyed them
im not saying striking isnt important but without a ground game ur garbage
as for not thinking if uve ever been in a fight u would know that almost everything u do is on instinct until it goes to the ground and then it becomes a thinking game

Your point is well taken but he didnt beat good strikers and when him and his family went to japan they lost many fights to strikers and grappplers. The early ufc were mostly meat heads who weren't great at the stand up game therefore there on different levels on the ladder of martial arts so thats not a great comparison. Thats like me saying look at cung le or melvin manhoef. That's like me saying look at cung le or melvin manhoef. Obviously if you have a good ground game and the other person isnt great anything the grapple has the advantage, viceversa

Ur joking right. In MMA people actually hit the other person, not make noise and pretend to hit they guy. And if u bring up suplexes or anything like that, remember that wrestlers jump and move with the other so it's easy to perform the move. Not to mention the ring has alot of give to it making the impact less painful if at all. And injuries the guys get in WWE is by pure acident just like any sport, say performing a move wrong. MMA guy get they're injuries from actually being hit, & hit hard

ur a fool.. Lol mma Training is much more intense than WWE training. MMA guys are much stronger pound for pound than wwe wrestlers.

LOL - The only one having gay thoughts while watching the UFC is you buddy, not the fighters. If I were you, I wouldn't be admitting that you have gay thoughts when you see men grapple... that makes you the fag.

i know, some of them were talented and were athletes, but alot of them worked out just for show, if u look there is a vid of undertaker and someone else asking Ricky hatton about training, and how he can still fight and train all those hours.. Most WWE guys just take roids and diet and lift weights like a body builder. They have no idea about explosive strength or conditioning training.

yeah, i used to watch WWE and noticed now that the undertaker was at one time an actual fighter, one way you can tell is the stance

what kind of stupid comment , wwe is an act, ok there are risks involved like with everything else, accidents happen , thats all ... mma fighters are true athletes who go though years of training and physical conidtioning to fight in such a dangerous sport ... your comment was the stupidest thing ive ever head

sorry to say, but MMA is majorly BJJ. the strikes in MMA have almost no use.

Until you fight loyto machida... then your like damnit i wish i had more striking capabilities.

There are just as many if not more knockouts than submissions. Striking is very relevant in MMA so you really should be sorry to say.

really? Because chuck liddel in his prime, lyoto machida, anderson silva, some GSP fights, rich franklin, and many other fighters seem to make good use of it. Yeas they know wrestling and BJJ but it depends on the individual and what he excels most at and who he is fighting

are you retarded? you have obviously never watched a real ufc fight. how do you think guys get stitches and cuts while they are fighting? lol.

yes they do, if there gonna get a successful take down they need to get some good strikes and combos in or a shot to the face to disorient their opponent making a good take down with an advantageous landing position

How can you train to get impacts the only way you can do that is to get punched right which is just comp?

can you hit with your elbows and knee in mma?

do you mean bouncer? I do MMA myself sence I was 3 years old I leared to walk in my dads dojo. I dont know do you know lots of styles like stand up grappling and ground , even though you never use ground on the street wich is like the number 1 rule

Mma is not a fighting style

problem with MMA. they don't cover health insurance such as AIDS/HIV because of bloodspat.

you dont think they test for that and hepatitis a,b and c? its a prerequisite for most other combat sports

Yeah they do that in all fighting man
boxing, mma, and wrestling even though matches are set up those dudes still get injured and cut.

this seriously looks like a video games, mixed martial arts, 2 people with a bunch of different attacks

dont forget that they make severe medical exams to this guys.

"UFC is now becoming one the worlds most popular sport" lol ffs, the sport is called MMA, UFC is just an organization -.

UFC is a competition within the MMA genre. Mixed Martial Arts is the sport, UFC the competition, ok?

UFC is the name of the organisation that simply organizes the fights, there are other organisations and leagues that do the same. In the same way that the NFL for example organises American Football.

MMA is mixed martial arts which is simply a style of fighting which utilises many different disciplines. An MMA fighter may use any techniques taken from any of the martial or combat arts.
So....the UFC is an organisation which hosts MMA fights, simple.

I watched an even funnier video yesterday. It was called "Quad-The Jocks." Check it out.

What that NEW AGE fighters was supposed to mean?? the New Age movement

these guys do ji jutsu and some do shotoken karate so they r fast jeez don't speak if u haven't seen ufc or any mma fights

try to fight a real fight with acrobatics and you ll be eating dirt before you go .
I totally respect kung fu as all arts but i hate people that say such idiotic things.

haha please never say such stupid think any more, i think u've been watching jacky chan movies a lot.. those guys will rip off u're kung fu masters legs

seeing that i'm a practitioner of gong fu and wushu i think i know what i'm talking about. in fact i've only seen one movie with jacky chan in it. these MMA fighters may be strong but they are not fast enough to catch a gong fu master. They also have no technique. they use their strength for everything. why you strength when you can use strategy and leverage. I don't think you know the true power of shaolin gong fu.

i feel it is stupid to disregard any legitimate fighting style. what may work for one person will feel totally unnatural to another person. i also feel that there is s much that hasn't been done in the UFC yet.

wow... you act as if a gong fu master is defenseless against an MMA practitioner. we are taught ways of defending against all types attacks in gong fu. You've obviously never tried gong fu because if you did you'd know that our art is extremely versatile, like MMA, unlike karate or taekwondo. and yes, we even have wrestling (shuai jiao) and grappling techniques (qinna). A practitioner of gong fu would expect any attack from an MMA fighter. oh and once again, these men wouldn't be fast enough to

You've been watching to many Bruce Lee movies.

nothing wrong with that, Bruce Lee pretty much came up with MMA with his JKD concept.

but to turn that whole thing around and apply that to kung fu is in itself pretty ignorance. Those flips are to maintain flexibility, balance and, more rarely escape or confusion.
Chinese kung fu is actually very good against straight-forward aggressors, but it can't be classified as one simple art, it's too broad.

All ufc fighters Now specialize in 2 different martial arts
The most popular is Jujitsu< grappeling and ground fighting And Kickboxing The Asians are too weak and not powerful enough to compete against the europeans and Americans How easily people will lash out against what they do not or can not comprehend. I wish all the internet tough guys would get over the fact that millions of people study thousands of styles of martial arts and many of those styles actually can serve as defensive styles in a street situation. No one art dominates all others, no one person will beat all others. We train how we feel we need to, let it be just that. true true, even if one art was somehow "superior" it would be pretty damn hard to measure that. one thing stupid about NatGeo's fight science is the fact that they used different weighted people in the punch/kick tests and in testing "MMA" they used all heavyweights. LOL. dude its called mixed martial arts. so you and your yed friends can go and sell fried cockroaches does anyone see the information learned from these tests will probably be used by some bleeding heart types to justify banning this sport? Some kids are gonna do this stuff in a backyard and someone is going to get hurt(inevitable), lawyers called, lawsuits filed and then some politician who is up for re-election will get involved and laws passed and the end of MMA.

Bas Rutten is the man!

...continued: these men wouldn't be fast enough to grab the leg of a shaolin monk. also, have you ever heard of iron body skill? if not you should look it up. throwing a shaolin monk on the ground head first wouldn't do any damage at all. in fact they probably wouldn't even feel it. iron skull training.

Have you ever seen a shaolin monk fighting in a real competition ? No. And why ? Because they know they will get their asses kicked. Even Jet Lit made a movie with MMA Fighters and he said "These guys are REAL fighters, in a real fight I wouldn't last 1 round with one of them"

yes, i have seen one in a real competition. many of them. and jet li is for one a wushu practitioner, which is a demonstrative sport. there is a huge difference between wushu and gong fu. real gong fu isn't in the movies. and what movie would that be?

The name of the movie is Cradle 2 The Grave. Check the extras, there's an interview with him. Name one of the gong fu/kung fu fighters fighting professionally ? And don't say Cung Le cause he's a San Shou fighter, that's Chinese Boxing. Forget about MMA. You don't even see a Kung Fu fighter in K-1. So let's hope that you might be the one who became a efficient Kung Fu fighter and become famous.

well, my shifu says i show much promise and he expects i'll be rather good if i continue my training like i have. i wish to show the world that not only can gong fu be an efficient fighting art, but that a girl can be just as good if not better at than a man as well.

theyre not trying to take you down to hurt you. they take you down and submit you lol

The difference is that this is martial sports and it can't be compared to concepts used in martial arts. Many moves that MA's use are illegal in UFC fights because they are too dangerous. Seriously if every martial artist had the same training as UFC fighters, these guys would be inferior. Especially because in real life these guy couldn't effectively defend against multiple or armed attackers.

When does a martial art turn into a sport?...
When the focus goes from killing to scoring points.

his knd of ufc fighting isnt efficient. i could easily k.o. someone who uses it by kicking them in the throat. kicking is way more useful in a fight than punching because you get the distance advantage because your legs are longer than your arms. low kicks are easier to block and they dont hurt as much as getting kicked in the ribs or neck. and that gay jujitsu grabbing crap isnt good either. i say the best fighting styles are Jeet kune do and Jun Fan.

I notice you havent been in any cage fight or mma fight=) Sure Jeet kune do and Jun Fan are both excelent seldefence martial arts. But will it realy work in a cage fight? And belive me there are good kickers in this sport and they don't get that much advantage from the kicking range. If i would meet you in a cage fight and you where kicking most i would read you when you want to kick when you reakt keep distance and then pow get you on the ground=)

Lol, try and kick any ufc fighter. They would grab your leg and submit you in a heartbeat with that Jujitsu crap.

Actually it's a common misconception that you have more reach with your legs than with your arms.

If you are a good martial artist you have the same reach with either.

it's just the majority of people kick more than they punch.

Uh...I can fairly convincingly prove that you have more reach with your legs than with your arms. Without the use of footwork you most definitely do. Stepping in with a jab is one thing; reach is determined from a stationary position.

For example. a leg kick can be thrown from well outside punching range, especially because of the lean involved in applying hip torque to the kick.

I'd like to see you do the throat-kick to a training dummy and post it on youtube.

Believe me - it's not as easy as it seems even on stationary target. And true to the spirit of JKD, it is even more difficult to real (especially trained) opponents which will react to protect their necks.

Unless you kick low to the side of the knee, that's when it's really effective, who started thinking flashy kicks were good?

Kicking to the side of the knee is a bad idea. The knee joint, when bent, is the strongest link in your leg. Far better to attack the thigh, which is a soft target to which MUCH more damage can be done.

The thigh has a pressure point in it as well, but you would knee that. You would kick the knee in the unnatural bend, it's very dangerous and a cruel move though.

Pressure point? Nothing to do with it. It's blunt force trauma. It causes the leg to sieze and deaden and causes extreme pain. One or two full-powered leg kicks and most people won't be able to put any weight on it at all.

Wheras the knee, when bent as it should be in any decent stance, is a much stronger part of the leg. Kicks to it are much less effective.

Well there is a pressure point on the side of the thigh and right on the side of the knee *inside* the leg. Furthermore a kick "perhaps the right word would be a stomp" is a very nasty and vicious move to do to someone at their knees, they'd have to be trained enough to move or bend their leg in the appropriate direction and even then it is hard to see coming. For the average person they'd never see it.

Uh, no. You gigantic douche. It is not a pressure point at all.

Ever been given a dead arm? That's not a pressure point. Ever been knocked unconscious with a punch to the jaw? That's not a pressure point either.

If you consider every point which causes damage to be a pressure point then making the distinction between a pressure point and an effective strike is pointless.

It is NOT a pressure point.

to bad kicks aren't nearly as coordinated as punches and open u up to sweeps and throws
besides the mma fighters guard is strongest around the neck and jaw so not only would a neck kick fail almost all the time that would be one of the easiest ones to catch
and how exactly would that "gay jiu jitsu crap" not work?
if u still think kicking is better than punching look up the jerome lebanner vs park yong soo fight it

Depends on whos throwing the kicks and punches. If someones throwing a fast round house its not gonna be the easiest thing to catch.

Had to stop about 15 secs in when the narrator said, "UFC is now becoming one of the world's most popular sports". Do they do any research or editing before these stories? The UFC isn't a sport; MMA is a sport.

UFC is NOT a sport. UFC is the league, MMA is the sport. Don't throw the word retard around if you're just going to be ignorant...

MMA if you think about it is it's own fighting style. It's mixed martial arts because they mix it up. Only from kickboxing styles if you notice. Muay Thai, etc. However. They only use a fraction of the style. A small fraction to be exact. If you were to put up an MMA fighter against a pure style fighter, more than likely, the MMA fighter will lose. Fusion is indeed better than each on it's own, but MMA isn't fusion, it just breaks the styles then puts it together as something new.

Quite the contrary! an MMA fighter could be of two kinds: one who has mastered one style then added on from other styles or mixed it all up from the start. A MMA uses techniques of a style that is most affective for and in a particular situation conducive to the fighter him/herself. MMA fighter is usually effective (taught by Bruce Lee) in all the four areas in fighting (ie. w/o weapons). if he were to put a pure style fighter on the ground for instance ..all that stand up is nullified!

Most MMA gyms in my area have a kickboxing class, a grappling class, and an MMA class to put it all together. It is fusion, and the grappling is always evolving. The reason they use separate classes is because no one really knows what techniques and training works best yet.
I still see fighters on tv using their dominant style(usually Muay Thai). Brock Lesnar uses a lot of American folk-style wrestling.
So if you put a boxer against a similarly ranked MMA fighter, the boxer would win?

From the biomechanics point of view individual variations, height, reach, flexibility, optimal degree of freedom, partial and complete strength should play a role in how a technique is throw. A person who can squat 800lbs would throw his techniques differently then someone who can bench press 400 lbs. This is rather crude, but makes a point.
I am saying this, because there is a tendency for people to look at computerized models as shown at 1:30 and try to copy them.
-ElasticSteel

if i get it right mixed martial arts mean he got all the fighting styles right i got taikwando and kickboxing i mix thre moves everytime wr going to had a free fight i kick the same kick in kick boxing and taikwando

LOL,,, this proves even if you know some martial arts, the bigger guy will still own you. sorry small fries.

Jiu jitsu does teach how the smaller guy should beat the big buy, but sambo and wrestling? weight is a HUGE advantage their.

sambo deals with more joint manipulation that jiu jitsu.
and wrestling is mostly speed and technique. I'm a varsity wrestler and a Brazilian jiu jitsu practicioner so i know..and i took sambo for 2 years

Well I wrestle also, got a vid on youtube not in my channel, got to go cuba, only times i ever lost was in heavier weight classes, so i know,,, their is a reason they have weight classes.

Is'nt martial arts meant only for development of the divine soul of homo sapien's physical body ? Why is all this outward chauvinism required ?

Notice the head gear on the striking dummy in Tito's elbow strike. There have been studies for years showing that head gear such as this expands the circumference of the head, thus increasing the power of the strike and making it more likely that the brain will suffer a shock for a knock-out.

Why would expanding the circumference make a difference? It seems to me that the more surface area there is, the more spread out the impact would be. Not trying to be a dick, I was just wondering.

No problem. The pivot point of the head is the spinal column/neck area. Most knock outs are because of the jarring of the brain. The larger circumference causes more recoil of the neck/spinal column. The shock is a constant even though the head gear is soft. It may give, but it will still shock the brain.

Ahh, I see. As if you had a balloon tied to a stick. If you flicked the balloon it would shake back and forth and recoil. The bigger the balloon the more dramatic the shakes and recoil would be.

Thanks, appreciate the explanation.

Ha, well when it comes to head safety and such, you can never know too much.

Now I just need to hire you to investigate Craig's List scammers for me and we'll be all good.

LOL, I just stay away from that after the "Craiglist Killer" we had up here in New England. Neat concept for "honest folks" but honest folks stay away.

Nice to have this done through modern science but I imagine a little research on war history would demonstrate the same thing

Rick

UFC= tournament
MMA= sport/fighting style

Wrong
UFC = A mma organization
the tournament ur thinking of is TUF The Ultimate Fighter its somthing run by the UFC

well yeah but it is a tournament in a way a very spaced out tournament with 6-9 week gaps between matches. the ultimate fighter is a reality tv show type tournament where the winner in each respective weight class is offered a contract with ufc

I have a question, im 14 years old i have have done Taekwondo since i was 10, yesterday i tried out MMA and it was good tough my arm and neck still hurt becuse of the chokes and locks, my friends say im to young for MMA so does my parents and i dont know if i should continue becuse i dont want to break anything or get hurt

you know the guys that do the worlds strongest man comps. you think those guys are on roids. cuase they can pick up cars and move trucks. you think they on steroids to do that or you think it's natural strength

to be honest we are so complex and advance organism, that every move you watch your body records it, and when the adrenaline strikes you start to remember them, and beat the crap out of inexperienced person, well if you want more control then memorize and practice after that street will be like going through Disney land.

haha your comment made my day :)

The typical pro boxer can punch harder than the typical MMA fighter and, the typical Muay Thai fighter can kick much harder than the typical MMA fighter. The MMA fighters put the basics of each together, but Muay Thai and, boxing fighters should have been featured.

I'm not saying they do or that they do not . . but it is possible that some of these fighters have previously been trained in Boxing / Muay Thai. I'd have to check their background. Regardless, the results are pretty impressive when you look at them in more detail.

yeah, lots of the fighters have backgrounds in a single way, and then learn the others as they progress

silva is a stryker pure and simple, thats all he does is strike, he may have some good jj, but he wouldnt use it if there was a ranking system 4 boxing rjj would be a 10th degree blackbelt, silva would get owned

Yes Cody but you made one mistake is your analysis:

Silva is not retarded.

You ever watch any of the early UFCs?

How many of those boxers and stand up fighters were able to KO a guy before getting takendown? A few did, most didnt.

Now i know what ur thinking, we're talking about Rjj who is a great boxer...but still, he has no wrestling or takedown defense. Odds are Silva would wade in with hands held high then shoot.

He'd tapout Rjj in seconds.

And hes not stupid, he fought a smart fight and he didnt care if it was boring, he cared about winning.

ok so becuase anderson didnt finish his last teo fights that makes him a bad fighter.i think the 7 fights he had before that were amazing enough.just face is anderson would tear apart rjj he is best with fighters that attack and espicially since rjj is one dimensional all he would have to is get him in a clinch he would be gone fuck a flying knee would finish him.he is not used to being hit by attacks that powerfull and i havnt even begin to talk about what he could do to him on the ground

eally, andersons gonna clinch up with a man who could ko him by grazing him with his pinkey knuckle, and even to clinch with roy, he would have 2 take a punch, and that punch would knock him out

im just stating what the facts are.anderson is a world class muay thai fighter i think he can take one punch and u seem to think that just because rjj is a boxer he is some ko god.anderson could keep his distance and land some good leg kick which would take away from roy punching power alot.roy is a completely one dimensional fighter yes he is a world class boxer but that will not get him a win in mma.

uhhh Boxing is very important in MMA,
Boxing fitness/conditioning and Boxing techniques, being a boxer is actuallt very good thing, being Muay Thai is also very good and has good kicks....Boxers entering mma usually start learning to kick

when did i say boxing wasnt important i just said he would not last knowing only boxing.he has takedown defense cant clinch grapple probably cant work well in a clinch being hit by knees into your liver.

roy jones is 50 times the boxer than anderson is a muay thai fighter, records indicate that, and with a mma glove on, rjj is a ko god

so your just gunna ignore the fact that anderson knows how to kick and can knee way harder than rjj can box.yeah he might be a ko god boxing but in mma he wouldnt stand a chance.once again anderson could leg kick him the whole and rjj wouldnt even be able to punch hard at all.the only place rjj is used to getting hit is in the face and torso.hes not used to having a muay thai pulled on him and knees flying in his face.he is completely one sided and that will not work in mma

ok buddy, if its so impossible for roy 2 win than y wont dana let it happen, it would be a serious blow 2 boxing if one of there best ever got beat, because he knows roy would win

Boxers are great fighters, I happen to be a former one, and it is hard training, BUT mma is ALOT harder

And in a street fight, boxing only does good if the fight doesn't end up in a grapple situation or on the ground, and most street fights do end up on the ground

I'd have to put my money on an MMA fighter any day over a boxer...

kicking is proven to use 60% more energy than punch, boxings a good sport but kickboxing is the way forward

im not a diehard mma fan, however a fighter called "cung le" has caught my eye- however i read a comment saying he wouldnt make it in "UFC".. is there that much a difference? i thought mma was, well, mma?..

first of all flloyd mayweather woudn't even fight sean sherk because the paycheck is 350x smaller then the one he gets fighting big name boxers.
second anything can happen in a fight

Mayweather would get owned in a street fight... he's a boxer not an all around fighter. Yes, he is an amazing boxer but Sherk is trained to fight in a fashion much closer to a street fight. End of story.

Sherk could never catch Mayweather.
Shrek vs Pacquiao?

I don't like Sherk that much, but he would kick Mayweather's ass for sure. He'd get picked up and slammed, and then submitted, in a heart beat.

Am I the only one bothered that Tito Ortiz made it into this bunch?

i think a good fighter should learn some kind of non impact form of fighting. jui-jitsu ( i think thats right) nin-jitsu etc. i mean they had a show somewhere on here where a few MMA guys took massive defeats when placed against non-impact forms. granted its not the best but it could work? am i right? wrong?

I think ufc is great entertianment and an excellent way for boosting cardio, but I think in street fights they probably would not fare as well. Just my opinion.

Tim Sylvia is shit though mate.
How can a boxer defeat an MMA fighter if it goes to the ground and trust me, 95% of MMA fights go to the ground.
I'm sorry but watch UFC 1, Art Jimmerson v Royce Gracie.

ufc fighting is great entertainment and the fighters (really actors) must undergo intense training. but in all reality they are street fighting dogs. ive seen fights like this in the street. ive seen men get who have skill far past this, its called chi, and the men who perfect it can beat theses fighters with their breath.

but still, why do all of these people wast their time defending "fighters" they dont even know?

Face it boxing is a dying sport and its going to stay dead.
MMA is were its at now you need more skill and guts to step in any MMA fight.

<!--

Really amazing clip. Will copy paste some responsive comments from you tube from this video

* Ali is the greatest boxer who will ever walk THIS planet.

* That left hook is fucking massive, literally couldn't be any better.

for the above comment i wonder if he is talking about the left hook Ali took from Joe Frazier. Yes how did Ali got up after that. Ali was just not stinging fast, the ability to take the punishment, i have never seen in any pro boxer.

* In his prime no one could catch him. In his 2nd fight against Liston, he only threw 3 punches in the round, the third one got him so perfectly (1:21) that a lot of people never saw it and thought Liston took a dive

* Brother Muhammad Ali is the greatest athlete in the world.

He was fast, courageous and wasn'r scared to tell the truth.

No matter what you think of Brother Muhammad, he was a hero and a remarkable athlete that inspires others to love him and to honour him.

* norton did give ali fits...and frazier actually beat him and punished him so much you and i can never imagine ....but he beat frazier twice after his defeat and was involved in arguably the greatest fight of them all, the thrilla in manila.......so besides being a great talker, he was if not THE best of all time, right up there with the top 2 or 3 no doubt about it!!!!!

* professionally Ali was like 56 and 5 as a pro. (with his best years lost)
Before that as a amateur he was 100 and 5.
Ali was a great boxer, he didn't drag his back leg like Frazier. He didn't squat down and come up with a power punch like Tyson. He did eat fist's all day like Rocky. He was a genius, the world's finest technical example of a boxer. A real athlete. Jack of all trades, master of all. Thats why he is the greatest.

* Ali was, not only, the greatest boxer, but the best entertainer, he had a wonderful sense of humour and a great personality, its a shame there is nobody like him now.

* awesomeness!!

* I think the main difference between Tyson and ALI is ALI made other champs in the biggest games look like shit. What you see in the clip are all title games.
Tyson couldnt do that on the biggest games against Hlyfield ore lewis. I agree that Tyson would have hitten ghosts if he would have played ali. and Tyson admitted it himself that ali is the best of all times and even an example for tyson

* He is the GREATEST!

What always amazes me is his ability to find his range with almost every shot, and his ability to read how his opponent is gonna move and punch to avoid being hit.

It's like he was just so good at reading peoples movement.

There will never be another Ali.

* ALi was winning almost every rd in the Foreman fight.
Ali came off the ropes lots of times to lay combonations to George's face.
Shavers lost by a unanimous decesion and the scores weren't even close if you play it back on youtube.
Liston tries like Hell to get to Ali and couldn't and the 2nd fight you can see his haed snap back from the shot.
Norton fights as well as Shavers and Frazier and Foreman were all past ALi's prime.
Ali would have tortured slow ass marciano, Louis and Dempsy.

*
<!--

Forms are techniques executed in air. Forms are developed for various results. Some forms require fast and powerful movements while some have graceful slow movements of arms legs and body. There are some forms which require both this movements, while the practitioner is moving with vigor and speed, suddenly the body comes into slow gracious movements.

Apart form the cardio vascular workout one gets from this Martial forms there is lot more to it. These forms where first developed for the purpose of meditation. Meditation in motion. What makes it meditation apart form the aerobic exercise the body gets?

Not much if the practitioner considers it as an exercise drill as an aerobic work out or a work out in gym. All the movements are memorized and the body goes through it in a routine way.

The other quality comes when the element of attention is brought towards own body and the movements each time the martial arts is performed. All the time the awareness or attention is on own body and see to it that the body is in firm and balanced position all the time. Many a times the students of Martial Arts are seen going through this form from mere memorized patterns. The eyes are on the ground most of the time. The eyes need to be focused of where a technique is executed. The neck and eyes perhaps have most important part to play and is neglected by most beginners and the instructors have to take care they are not neglected.

Suppose a block has to be executed, the eyes and mind should be looking for a technique executed by an opponent and block it with speed and vigor. When the mind sees a real attack, although it is thought of, the body will react with more speed and vigor, not a dead technique executed in air. Similarly for a punch or kick executed, if an opponent is visualized the kick and punch will move with speed and vigor, to stop him with that one powerful blow and it won’t be slow, else the opponent is not a dead piece of meat, if you are slow you will get one. All mind game but it works and the form gains a new vigor and attention.
<!--

It showed some true incidents of how the human body pushes the limits when in extreme dangerous situations. A man can run faster than a human body can normally do when in extreme dangerous situations.

This part of human consciousness, the hidden power of mind can be put to the martial arts training. This mental aspect is not limited to any particular form of martial arts as it is not a physical technique, but something to be done with the mind while practicing those techniques.

Bruce Lee's statement in the movie Enter the dragon, 'Boards don't hit back' says a lot. It has been a favorite of number of martial arts practitioners around the world.

Yes sure boards don't hit back, neither do the punching bag or other stationary articles used to practice the different striking techniques. All the martial arts schools start with performing and practicing the techniques in air and on the advanced level shadow boxing or shadow fighting drills are also important part of training. And there is nothing to hit back to you.

This can leave a very important aspect of training the alertness, one can go on doing the techniques in a unconscious manner just training the body to move according to the technique and sharpening the same.

Using the alertness and mind can bring about a great change. Suppose while training on the bag if one sees the most dangerous opponent instead of the dead bag. The fear created can bring about much intensity and speed in the techniques. The body and mind is relatively more alert. i used this while practicing on the bag and could feel a drastic change in the speed and the power.

The body reacts in much faster and the intensity of the punch or kick is far greater. Even when te body gets tired, and we think of an good opponent ready to ponce on you, you keep going, the body is pushed to its limits. It won't push to the limits if there is a dead bag in front of you.

In those days i would think of facing the best that i felt Muhammad Ali and Benny "The Jet" Urquidez . Then no amount of practice would bring satisfaction. More speed, more alertness, otherwise you are a dead meat.
<!--

Often the those who knew this art, or where the masters of this art called Ninja or Ninja warriors where shown as having super natural powers like getting invisible or showing acrobatics skills beyond human limits and the use of various weapons. This perhaps was due to the techniques of stealth, spying and the sudden stealth attacks where used by the actual Ninja warriors.

While the Samurai warriors of Japan were trained in head to head combat, with the use to known weapons like swords. Ninja were the ones who were trained in the expertise of spying and stealth techniques along with the combat techniques with or without the weapons and the training also included many acrobatics techniques dealing with the conditioning and balance of the body in various difficult situations.

In this episode Jason Chambers and Bill Duff travels to Japan to unlock the mysteries of the secret and deadly martial art of Japan called Ninjutsu or popularly known as Ninja. These two guys will travel in Japan, visit some well known schools of teaching the Ninjutsu shadow and deadly weapon techniques and also explore a hidden Ninja camp.

As stated above various, Ninjutsu was born of the battles of supremacy in Japan. It literally means the art of invisibility. While the Samurai battled in the battlefields, Ninjas did the dirty thing spying, sabotage and assassination. Although the spying and the stealth called the dirty work, it is the one of the main aspect of modern day weapons and fighting strategies of all countries.

Ninjas played a powerful role in shaping Japanese history. As Japan modernized, there was no need of Ninjas and the Ninjutsu techniques dissipated in various martial systems like Karate, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Aikido. All this Martial arts of Japan where influenced by Ninjutsu.

Ninjujstu cannot be a martial sport as it has varied disciplines and fighting techniques like spiritual refinement, unarmed combat, sword fighting, staff fighting, throwing and grappling, spears, bow and arrow, small stars and various other small weapons, explosives, water training, disguise, horsemanship, stealth and entering methods as well as escaping method. It cannot be captured in a ring.

In a modern Ninja Dojo they meet an instructor, Yost Fulton. As always they gets the challenge after they learn few techniques of Ninjutsu. First they meet Sensai Seishi Horibe, the instructor of close combat with short knife. In certain areas of Japan the peasants and ordinary people could not keep weapons. So they developed deadly techniques with weapons found on the streets. Small weapons in the hands of an expert were deadly.

They take few lessons with the short knife strikes and defense, wearing the safety glasses. Here they are shown a technique, with the motto 'attack after a good defense'. which works well with any kind of combat. They are shown a Jiu Jitsu style take down of the opponent with knife, and striking him while he is down in pain.

We get a lesson through a video tutorial for this Ninja Technique.

Some instructive comments from first video clip from you tube

* hatsumi isint the last ninjutsu master , ther lots of ninjutsu master around the world , hatsumi is just the last memeber of an iga family

* Karate would actually be influenced later on once the Japanese took control of Okinawa and Karate started to spread more northward, Judo and Aikido I know nothing of, and ninja were more for information and sabotage, assassinations were more secondary. Also you might wanna look around more because there are many books that attribute ninja's to empty handed and weapon combat...just not in the traditional sense...

* The problem with most books on Ninja is that they aren't accurate. The reason for this is because there is little-to-no historical accounts of the Ninja to back up the many claims associated with them. While they did indeed exist, further details are few in number and often obscure.

* Wow, talk about misinformation. Ninjutsu didn't influence any of the arts they listed. Karate was developed on Okinawa and it was based on the previous Okinawan Martial Arts (which were based on Chinese Martial Arts). Judo and Aikido were based on Jujutsu. And Jujutsu was developed by the Samurai.

* Also, according to historians, Ninja's were more focused on information gathering rather than assassination and sabotage. Believe it or not, there's little information that supports the claims that ninja's were skilled in empty-handed or weapon combat or at least trained in those arts.

Part 2, Jason and Bill goes to learn the technique of moving away from the strike. Not to get hit and avoiding it, still not losing the balance and eyes of the opponent. Very important in any form of Martial Arts or combats.

Here they watch some techniques of falling on the ground and rolling on the ground while maintaining the balance, not getting hurt while falling or rolling, and the vision on the opponent. This i guess is not taught in many martial school, but has it's own importance. My first martial instructor was not a martial instructor at all if i look at the striking techniques he taught. What he did in the beginning was made countless drills of falling down and rolling on the ground. that did not help me much in ring as those were strike based sports competition. But it did helped me during a couple of auto accidents where the body fell in the way that it got mimimum damage and also on the few occasions of slipping down.

Jason and Bill find it difficult in the beginning and then had to perform the technique of falling down and avoiding the razor sharp sword attack. Than the master shows a grabbing locking and take down move. We get a online lesson of this great Ninja move from a video tutorial. It's impressive and practical move.

Than they move to learn some techniques of throwing small weapons. The master there shows them to throw the most iconic weapon fueled by the Ninja Movies, the throwing stars. He shows the few grips and release of the stars before throwing them at the target. Both the fighters get some practice of throwing the stars on the aiming boards. Stars were mainly used to disguise the opponent before the attacks that followed, sometimes they could be a deadly weapons too. The master explains that in ancient Japan it was a crime to own weapons for any other people than the Samurai. So the fighters other than Samurai had to rely on smaller weapons not easily seen. Hence this form of weapons came in existence.

Next they go take lessons in sword fighting. They visit the Dojo of Sensai and Ninjutsu Master Toru Hashimoto. The master demonstrates some real good slashing techniques on the target made of bamboo and fiber. The sword would slash the thing in pieces without pushing it too far giving a fine finish to the cut part. The essential result of a good technique. I use to visualize my hands or kicks as swords cutting swiftly through a bamboo stick so that it does not get pushed far of. Jason later tries to cut the bamboo resulting in pushing it. The demonstration was given in Germany Budo-Gala 1992.

I remember growing up watching Chuck Norris movies before I actually started training in TKD (Taekwondo), boxing and kickboxing.

Grtandmaster Javed Khan also gave us lessons of other martial arts along with these in pursuit of making an overall better fighter. The other being combat techniques of ground fighting and grappling borrowed from arts like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo and wrestling. He use to tell us you have good striking techniques like punching and kicking, what if somebody gets hold of you or you go on the ground while fighting, you need better ground fighting skills then.

Chuck Norris movies were favorite with me and my cousin, those days cd and dvd were yet not in the market. We used to get the movies on video tapes from video tape library and would coax the owner to get more. The owner once gave me a tape of Muhammad Ali's greatest fights, which contained clips of actions from Muhammad Ali's fights. Watching that tape again and again brought about a great change in my fighting style. Mostly the gracious movements in the ring with relaxed body while fighting and speed. I remember in those days of watching this tape I read about selection of boxing competitors for state level boxing championships.

I with my friend rushed where the selection was to take place. I had training of Taekwondo then but none of Boxing. All the boxing knowledge I had was watching the tape of Muhammad Ali's greatest fights. My body had imbibed that so well. There my previous martial arts instructor was present as on of the trainers. He did not like me as I had switched over of Tae Kwon Do training With Master Javed Khan. He and other trainers tried everything to prevent me from getting selected. I was pitted virtually with each of their best boxers. Weight category had no meaning when it came for my sparring training. I used weight 62 kilograms and was pitted till 92 kgs weighting opponents all trained and with ring experience. Beat them all went to the state level and became the champion in my weight category, by KO in the first round victories in two bouts I was suppose to fight. Well for national Championships, the loser of the finals against me was sent. They know the reason why.

Some interesting and instructive comments for this video on youtube

* man of the millenium(Chuck Norris). nobody else with his status is such a good person. and helps so many other people.

* that standing over the head arm-bar was sweet.

I never knew he knew Jiu-jitsu, i thought he was just a kick boxer/tae kwon do guy.

* my understanding is that chuck is actually partially responsible for bjj(Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) coming to the u.s. way back before anyone knew what bjj was he was buying schools for the machado brothers to teach here. that's what i've heard anyways.

* Why would he armbar someone when his roundhouse breaks every bone in their body?

* Chuck's movies may not've been the greatest, but I've always been impressed with his desire & willinness to learn more & train with the best in a wide variety of styles. His persistence in working out, period, is impressive when you compare him with someone like Steven Seagal; Chuck is, what, 15 or 20 years older than Seagal, but Seagal's in pathetic physical condition apparently because he lacks the self discipline to train hard. Yeah, Chuck's something of an inspiration

* lol helicopter armbar.

* You should read about Chuck Norris more, he does know BJJ and was a big promoter of it in the martial art magazines back when he was really famous, he studied BJJ religiously and includs it in his own system, Chuck KwanDO

* I wonder what would have happened if chuck fought royce at ufc 1

* Machado doesn't just give out black belts. Norris earned it.

* shortly after this video chuck norris demonstrated his roundhouse kicked and immediatley killed everyone within a 2 mile radius...

* The Machados appeared on an episode of Walker Texas Ranger.
<!--

Both the posts with the video created for History Channel series called Human Weapon, took us to some best training schools and camps and the grandmasters of the respective arts.

Along with it there some video animated tutorials for some of very good and effective techniques and online lessons from the best grandmasters and instructors. This episode made for History channel will take us to the history of Mixed Martial Arts or MMA, where Jason Chambers a professional MMA fighter and Bill Duff a pro football players and a wrestler will be on a journey to explore the unique history of this hyper violent sport, along the way they will learn some time honored techniques and train with some of the legendary fighters of this ultimate fighting sport. Then the will enter the rings and take on two fighting machines in a full blown MMA bout.

First they travel to the sunny Los Angeles, the Mecca of Mixed Martial Arts or MMA. It's just over a decade this hybrid fighting form has evolved from underground blood sport into a world wide phenomena. This sports popularity increased so much that it rivaled boxing and professional wrestling in Pay Per View PPV television shows.

It surpasses the punishments of these two sports also in most cases. The MMA does not limits itself to one technique, the fighters are free to hurt their opponents in variety of ways and techniques borrowed from various martial arts and combat sports. The techniques used in MMA bouts are punches, kicks, Grapples, take downs, throws, knee strikes and submissions. The techniques borrowed from martial arts form and combat sports like boxing, Thailand's Muay Thai, Japenese Karate, Korean Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling and such. It does not matter where the techniques come from, if they are effective use them. Over the period of time the techniques that worked are used more where as the techniques that were not effective faded.

This also forced the fighters coming from particular styles of fighting to work and study other fighting styles. Fighters from striking form of martial arts like TaeKwondo TKD, Karate and kickboxing and Muay Thai had to study and train under the grappling, take down and submission based martial arts like Jiu-Jitsu, Judo and wrestling to avoid and defend other those techniques.

The journey of Jason and Bill starts with Big John McCarthy Ultimate Training Academy. There they witness a intense training match inside full size MMA octagon. Watching along with them was MMA legend Bas Rutten.

Bass is a black belt in both Karate and Judo, a brutal kick boxer and a brutal and savage wrestler. Sebastiaan "Bas" Rutten (born February 24, 1965), a Dutch mixed martial arts fighter. Bass was a three time King of Pancrase, former Ultimate Fighting Championship Heavyweight Champion, and is a certified MTBN Thai Boxing instructor, Pancrase instructor, and has a 5th Degree Black Belt in Kyokushin karate and a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. He is also the founder of "The Bas Rutten System" and the author of various martial art books and videos. He holds notable wins over Frank Shamrock, Masakatsu Funaki, Kevin Randleman, Guy Mezger and Tsuyoshi Kohsaka. His trademark move was the kicks in the liver area, which he called 'Liver Shots' "Rutten Jump," which he performed in the ring every time he won a fight, resembling a jumping split.

Bass had a challenge for Jason and Bill, after the training bout he says, 'Now, are you ready for this, cause that's what you gone a do :-).' Bass explains them that they will be working with some professional fighters, some of the finest and they will help them in learning the techniques of punching, kicking and submission. Submission is the technique which has brought more victories to MMA fighters than any other techniques until now. At the end of the journey Jason and Bill would go head to head against two of the sports toughest fighters in the very octagon MMA ring they witnessed the intense training fight.

Bills opponent would be Ricco "Suave" Rodriguez, a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and winner of ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship. Bill says that considering that he has never entered the octagon ring he would be lucky to get out alive let alone victor. Jason is not going to get an easier opponent either.

They travel to the other side of La in the town of fullerton, at Erik Paulson's Combat Submission Wrestling center. Here they will train and learn with modern fighter Josh Barnett a professional MMA champion known for his slams, his ground fighting and attitude. Josh explains them that MMA evolved from many sources, he says,'you have Pancrase, yo have pro wrestling, you have shoot wrestling. Late in the 90's people began to ask the big question, 'Which Martial art and the martial artist is truly the best? Josh says people watch film and see different martial art styles and began to wonder if a fighter from one style competes with other say kung fu or Karate against boxing who would win? this reminds of a question mostly asked about the two legend Bruce Lee and Muhammad Ali, who would have won the fight? and the discussions still goes on with fans of each taking their hero's side.

Josh believed that the best way to win was to take the opponent down to the ground held him for a submission. To do that he teaches double leg take down. We get to learn an online lesson on this very effective MMA technique and also a video tutorial with animated computer graphics.

We move on to the second video clip below

Then they meet Forrest Griffin, and takes valuable lessons for the defense against the effective double leg take down, called sprawl. This is the technique used by some strike fighters who are very good at striking the opponents with powerful and fast punches and kicks, but find themselves in difficulties, when on the ground. The technique of sprawl is a very good anti technique against the take down techniques. They both get some lessons for the same as even we get online lessons for this anti take down technique. A good video tutorial follows for this technique called spraw which just does not allow your opponent to take you down but the opponent is left vulnerable for many number of attacks.

Then they head towards the Hollywood at wildcard boxing, training center for few legendary boxers. There they meet champion kickboxer from Tae Kwon Do background and a MMA fighter Cung Le. They take some training in combination of kicks (more on combination of kicks and punches) and then a lesson in back spinning kick, used to be my favorite but work a lot for getting this right. First thing I did and also teach for this technique was to whirl on toe of the foot, not trying to kick but spin on the toe. After one gets the balance and speed in spinning then gradually start kicking on lower levels, speed and balance is most important, as this qualities develop go higher and higher. I use to dedicate 8 hours training in a day for this single technique, on punching bag. Any way there is a video tutorial for the same and I seriously feel it's not enough for someone wanting to learn it really well.

Then they move to get some training in Jiu Jitsu. We get to see and listen to interesting history of Jiu-Jitsu

will be continued in the next post.
<!--

These two guys travels and visits some martial arts training schools and camps that has produced champions and also visits and trains in the jungle camps where these deadly arts are taught and practiced in a tougher manner and not for sports or demonstration purpose.

In this videos we will see Hosts Jason Chambers and Bill Duff travel to the island nation of the Philippines, to learn about the violent and even deadly form of Martial Arts known as Eskrima. Jason & Bill will travel from the ancient forts of Cebu City to the rice patties of the Manalanga Mountains and to a military base in the capital of the Philippines, Manila, in order to learn the stick and knife techniques that were used to kill famous Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 and to destroy the terrorist organization Abu Sayef, also known as Al Qaeda, in the mid 1990's. At the end of their journey one of them will have to fight against a 5-time world Eskrima champion.

Eskrima is a one the most complex and dangerous martial arts of the world. In the Cebu city both the guys get to watch a demonstration of the stick fighting in the smelly crowded streets of the city. Two fighters with the stick in their hands, moving fast attacking and defending each others, looks more like a real fight than a demonstration as the people from the market place gathers around them to watch the fight. Even Jason Chambers a pro fighter asks a onlooker if it was real. The answerer however says, 'This can become real very quickly.' Indeed looking at the intensity and the speed of both the martial artist one can say he is not joking.

Jason says the streets and hot and smelly and the crowd wants blood and bruises from the fighters demonstrating the Eskrima stick fighting. They meet a guy called Gerald who happens to be the trainer of both these fighters. He stops the fighters as the intensity of the fighting increases and make sure that the fight does not get real. He has a challenge for the two hosts of television show. He says, 'If you guys train hard enough and you guys get good enough, I have a fighter for you to fight.' The fighter is Eskrima National champion, who would give them an ultimate test after they travel and train hard enough.

Eskrima is believed to have evolved in Philippines from Chinese Martial Arts and Malaysian martial arts form brought to them from the traveling traders. As local fighters fought and interacted with these other cultures, they corporate various fighting styles in their own fighting system. This is what Grandmaster Javed Khan has done in developing Khan Do Kwan, under whom I took many martial lessons.

Initially the art was practice among many groups, each group developing their own style of fighting. It was even used in the group or the gang fighting. It was until 1930s that a unified system was born, when twelve of most greatest master decided in the city of Cebu, to join their forces and formalize the style of Martial Arts. They called themselves Doce Pares, which means twelve heirs. They brought this martial art in sport and today as many as two thousand hundred Filipinos trains in this form of Martial arts. Sport Eskrima matches, where both the competitors are heavily padded with the safety equipments are held throughout the islands of Philippines.

Jason and Bill trains in one of the gym where the martial artist are training with sticks and daggers and knives. Jason says that fighting with the stick is like extension of the hand. Same principles and body movements apply the difference is that your hand gets and extension, and extension that has more lethal strike and which does not get hurt or feel the pain. The sticks are made of light fibrous wood. Here we get some video tutorial of Eskrima stick hitting and blocking, locking and trowing techniques. great ones. Also the locking and throwing technique called Labai is shown in a computer animated graphic tutorial. That is at the end of the video clip.

Some interesting comments on the first video from you tube below

* Please post the mma episode, i really hope to watch it! thanks!

* this show is aswome.:)

* anyone know of a site to learn this? There;s zero chance of someone in my town teaching this so if there's no self-teach-website I'll have to buy dvds

* but the thing is it is not promoted by the authority. like twentius said more people prefer judo, karate and other foreign martial arts. there are very few people who appreciate our very own martial arts.. :D

* don't know, I think it's pretty well appreciated. Most universties I know have a club/varsity for it and it was a pretty popular class in my university. I think it just doesn't SEEM as appreciated because while foreign martial arts classes for kids are offered pretty much everywhere, there aren't nearly as many classes in Arnis/Eskrima. But then I don't think you could/should let a 12 year old loose with a wooden stick anyway.

Still, I'd love it if it was recognized even more!

* I think foreigners are more motivated to learn our art than fellow Filipinos...
Instead of just learning karate, judo and taekwondo in university gyms, why don't we promote ours... :-)

* Thanks for uploading this episode. I will like to learn this art since I am Filipino.

We move on to next video clip below

Jason and Bill practice some stick movements. Practicing with the sticks looks a little more complex than bare hand practice of Martial Arts. While moving the stick the movement restriction of hand due to body joints is not there, the sticks has more freedom for varied moves. Then they get some lesson from the grandmaster teaching in that particular gym. He says don't dance when you hit, (Is Muhammad Ali, listening to this?). Well this is totally a different ball game than boxing. The master continues, 'don't dance, this is not dance studio, this is martial arts studio.' as Jason gives a smile to that statement. Than grandmaster Bonifacio gives very important lesson which not just applies to Escrima stickfighting but also to all the martial arts techniques, combat sports and even for other sports like baseball, tennis, cricket, golf etc. He says, 'When you are hitting, you have to follow through. Now when you hit and don't follow through then the strike is not as powerful as when yo follow through. Then he demonstrate two powerful and fast blows with the stick on the heap of tires, with a very good follow through.

The they head towards a temple associated with a great sage and a philosopher Lao Tzu. Here in the temple they take lesson from grandmaster Joe Borces. Joe Borces demonstrate a technique with grace and speed of a master. Very difficult to make out what he did until asked to slow in slow motion, which he does with explaining every move by breaking them in parts. The moves include defense and offensive moves. Once again we get a video tutorial of escrima with computer animated graphics of disarming the stick fighter before delivering the offensive blow. Great move and would require much practice drills so that it becomes a part of nervous memory system. After the training sessions, Jason leaves with the comment, 'One day we hope we would be half as good as you, thank you.' Both the guys bow to the master

They travel in a modified military jeep used for transportation, a weird vehicle according to Bill and Jason quite comfortable in the same. From port of Cebu they travel through waters to Negros Occidental, to take lessons in Martial Art called Kali. In rice paddies beneath the mountains they meet Leo Gaje, a worlds leading practitioner of Kali.

They are led to a paddy field, filled with water and mud, the environment where the ancient Kali was practiced. They are made to throw long bamboo sticks as spears are thrown run through the muddy waters get them and return only to throw them back and run after it again. The drill is demanding and exhausting as running fast through the muddy waters takes much effort. It's a wicked test of balance and endurance.

Next they are made to work on the upper body by striking hard on the water with the long bamboo sticks. Well the lower body and the aerobic endurance is not spared as they have to run through the same muddy waters while doing it. Pretty exhausting training method but building great endurance and stamina. Hit hard is the shout they hear all the time during this drill. Then with the short sticks slashing through the waters with the sticks.

After the Spain defeated them, they outlawed all Martial Arts. Forced to go underground local warriors incorporated the styles of local Martial Arts in variety of ritual dances. The Spanish were somehow convinced they were traditional ritual dances called Kali, in reality these dances were tightly choreographed sparing movements of Kali. When the Spanish got out the Kali Masters took the art out to towns and in the rice paddies. A deadly form of martial arts was born which relied on grappling and locking techniques like wrestling. Which could result in broken arms, legs and even necks.

Some interesting comments from yo tube for the second video before we more to the third one below.

* "This is not a dance studio!"
LOL... Jason got nailed...
I didn't know Phillipinos had such a high level of English! They needed translators in almost every other place they went in the far east...

* First! This was great! I do this type of training in JKD!

this video starts with something interesting an unexpected. They train like their ancestor did, using a 1600 pound buffalo as a sparring partner. a buffalo is brought in the rice field. Jason does not understand using a buffalo as a sparing partner and ask the reason for the same, somewhat concerned. The answer is more interesting :-), 'If you can take down a four feet guy you know I mean this two feet person is easy to take down.' A trained Kali fighter grabs the buffalo from his neck and tries to take him down on the floor, the buffalo resists with all it's strength and does not go down, it's body weight is too much to bring down by a small man. Bill looks happy to see this heavy buffalo won he says. Bill is heavy too the reason for his happiness.

Even if this techniques are not enough to bring down a buffalo they are more than enough to bring down a man. The we get to learn a technique called Baliog Pamali a very effective and powerful technique when you get to grab opponents hand. A great computer animated video tutorial for the same Kali technique, which can leave your opponent paralyzed or dead.

Next they travel to meet and train under grandmaster Nick Eliezar. He is one of the finest stick fighters in the country. He moves his body and stick with grace, speed and power. Again we get a chance for online lessons of Martial arts stick fighting. A video tutorial from grandmaster and also computer animated graphics for the Escrima stick fighting technique called Pangilog. A deadly lethal technique, requires many training drills i guess, to execute it with grace, speed and accuracy as all techniques need. The move includes grappling, locking and intense offense after the same.

They move to Manila, to the modern day warriors to learn some more Eskrima Stick Fighting techinques. They visit special group of military marine forces in the capital city of Manila which is fast growing. The general is asked the name of terrorist with whom these military guys are in encounter with and who were responsible for death of tourists and many Filipinos. The answer comes, 'Here in Philippines we call Abu Saiyyaf and others call it Al Qaeda. These fighters use double edged knifes instead of the sticks. Here we get a lesson to unarmed combat move very simple and very effective. The technique is called Palamut and we get to see a video tutorial for the same, with the online lesson of this martial art technique.

Some interesting comments from utube for this video clip before we move on to 4th one

* eskrima is cool

* seriouslty he'd be like "hmm group of farmers coming towards me..oh not again..."

* GM Eliezar is incredible. This was a higlight of this episode for me.

The general demonstrate few more moves on Bill. Like the we learned in the third video clip, his moves are short and effective.

Then they travel to Badian, in the jungle camp to train for few more Eskrima stick fighting techniques, under grandmaster Dionisio Canste. The moves of the master are graceful while he moves two swords in the air, standing on a bamboo bridge over a stream. He welcomes Jason and Bill to what he calls mountain quarters. The master shows them the beauty of the place, but warns them to be careful as they gonna be sweating it out. The grandmaster shows them a ritual sword dance. The master explains the whirling movements of swords in the ritual dance. He says you can get more opponents with the whirling movements rather just slashes with the sword or swords. 'Some people think it's for show, but it's not.' he says. The grandmaster has been practicing this art for 60 years.

Jason and Bill finds a nasty challenge when it was their turn of practicing the martial arts moves. They were made to stand on the bamboo floats to practice. Very difficult to balance while practicing or without it. They join few doing the same, whirling the sticks while on the bamboo float. Bill finds it really tough with flies everywhere. This grandmaster pits Jason and Bill against each other for the very first time. Jason has the edge as he has background in stick fighting, probably Jeet Kune Do. They go through some rigorous training drills. All the time the training drills look a lot of different than we see in the empty handed martial arts like Tae Kwon Do TKD, Karate or Kungfu. The blocks are taught too and in TKD or boxing or MMA training we are taught not to extend are arms much for block, as it opens up some area making it vulnerable for other attacks that could follow. In stick fighting there in not option but to reach for the block, if you don't want to move away.

The training continues as the grandmaster forced them to train in natural environment to condition their selves. Training drills in flowing water, beating the trees to work on the power of the blows. Bills says, 'I thought gym was tough, this was worse.' But they could feel their skills and endurance improving.

Some comments fro youtube from the 4th video clip

* im not one too use a weapon in a fight, but this looks about the best and most practical weapons fighting technique ive ever seen...

* it is considered one of (if not the best) fighting techniques on how to defend yourself with and from a knife.

* this is so much bettter than the discovery channel version fight quest...plus jason had eskrima background

* I wonder if the Ilocos or Pangasinan has their own style of stick fighting?

The fifth clip somehow refused to buffer on my laptop today after repeated trials. But it should be for their final fight with the champion and reading the comments it says Jason was chosen as with the Muay Thai, and he was good with the little training he had in Eskrima stick fight even tough he never looked close to winning.

Some comments from you tube from the last video

* i hate and love jason chambers simultaneously. hehe... he's too proud of himself. but it's still ok because he's a great martial artist (not to mention, the most handsome man i've ever seen.)

* I think it's better to learn how to fight with your body instead of using weapons, but anyway I like Kung Fu and all the weapons they got, here I don't find it that cool to use just a stick.

* That's a great episode there.

* this Is why tkd teches to keep the fist closed, or at least tight... less chance of a broken finger

* jason chambers is Jeet Kune do and MMA, he had a previous experience in stickfighting. Listen carefully. He was chosen to fight not Bill, because he has experience, that's it

* I think their conversations are too scripted. They obviously made that decsiion before they shot. its cool though. Jason chambers is a good martial artist

* a broken finger; lol, I don't belive; he wont to break the fight becouse he had enough :)

* That is what I call real courage...Jason is mentally very strong

* see when he gets disarmed the Filipino makes a little faint to his head, right after he gets the stick from the American. If it was a real fight he would have knocked his block off. Also after each tangle the American is backing up but the Filipino is always advancing. You couldn't say he held his own

* After minimal training, I think that Jason did very well. No, he did not even come close to winning. But he didn't quit and I think in the end he earned the respect of not only Perceval, but of the tuhons present at the match. Good job, Jason.

* after each episode I watch, I want to learn a different martial art. what torture! one life, sooo many styles...

* damn it look hella painful
couldnt even watch it

* Really awesome that the Philippines has their own martial art style. I appreciated for you to upload this episode.

<!--

In this videos s Jason Chambers a Mixed Martial Artist (MMA) and a professional Fighter, and Bill Duff a pro football player and a wrestler are a part on a mission, to explore the technique and history of different lethal Martial Arts. In these videos the mission is exploring the secrets of Lethal Martial Arts Muay Thai in Bangkok and Thailand. Apart from the what the city of Thailand is famous for the Buddhist Temples and the sex trades, the city has tens and thousands of fighters trained in the lethal art of Muay Thai, known as the science of eight limbs.

Muay Thai was practiced by the Thai soldiers against the traditional wars with Burmese. Thai soldiers had a upper hand in close combat without the weapons because of their training in this lethal martial arts training in Muay Thai. This martial arts also became the sport of the country and until 1930s the competitors fought with bare knuckle or with the hemp rope tied on their fist and hand, making the hand a lethal weapon. A martial art sport called Dembe in Nigeria still has the fighters with a hemp rope tied on one hand, dipped in sand. A post on this lethal sport called Dembe will be coming shortly with pictures on this blog.

It is not true that the Thai fighters dipped their hand wrapped in hemp rope in the glass powder, the video clip says. There are more than 65,000 fighters training in Muay Thai, under proper instructors and masters. This shows the amount of competition and the skills required by the fighters to reach the top.

After 1930s the government changed the rules to some extent and introduced the gloves and ring, as the ratio of serious injuries and the death were much higher. Even after the change in rules the sport remains a high risk sport and the injuries and death in the ring are still the part of the sport. Most of the fight ends in a knockout. Broken jaws and cracked ribs are common injuries in the ring. Punches, elbow strikes, knee strikes, pulling the opponents while striking, speed, accuracy are the trade marks of this sport.

Kyusityodtong a legendary master of Muay Thai and a owner of training camp is shown in the video. He has personally trained many fighters and champions. He invites Jason Chamber and Bill Duff to his training camp, and also ask them to survive one of his champions. Interesting to see this when these two guys are pitted against a human fighting machine, highly trained to bring the damage to their opponents.

this next video takes us to a gym in Bangkok which has produced about 30 champions. The low kick technique which is used as a powerful weapon against the opponents thighs is demonstrated and taught in this video. Also the defensive use of kick to push the opponent away or stop him from coming in is shown and taught. A sort of video tutorial for powerful and fast kiks of Muay Thai. While these guys are training for the low roundhouse kick, a very important tip is herd from the trainer, which even I repeat many a times while training the students in Taekwondo kicks, "when you are attacking, you don't forget your defense." Unlike the Karate, Taekwondo or other martial arts, Muay Thai fighters develop the shin bones and use them as striking weapon when striking with the low roundhouse kicks. The aim of the kick 'damage to the opponent.'

On their next stop they train with the Thai Soldiers, where a selected group of soldiers are taught an improvised version of Muay Thai, that focus one powerful accurate moves, accurate powerful moves that can take out opponent in a single deadly move. The master says, 'the point is three things 1. Fast 2. Powerful and 3. Accurate. He gives a demonstration from his soldiers to show it. The soldiers breaking heaps of bricks and concrete slabs with their bare hand strikes.

Then comes a tutorial on elbow strike in Muay Thai, you use that when the opponent is closer the trainer says. The elbow strike is demonstrated and taught using computer animation graphics and also on the punching bag and against a training partner.

Next they travel from modern capital Bangkok to ancient capital Ayutthaya by the river route. Here they meet a Muay Thai historian and a student, who takes them to a Buddhist temple, which is also served as training place for military personnels, prince and kings for hundreds of years.

The above clip starts with the mention that the Muay Thai was practiced in this Buddhist temple. That time it was not a sport but was a training center for the select warriors and the princes and kings. The training used to be with various weapons. Sometimes the weapons would drop while in fight, that time the warriors had to fight with bare hands. Training for this was called Muay Thai. Next is the demonstration and tutorial of Knee kick or knee attack in Muay Thai, with a training partner and also with animated computer graphics. Pull your opponent down as you drive up the knee, which increases a lot of power and damage to the attack.

Next they travel to Lop Buri, to learn the technique of unique punch. They visit a temple there where they find lots of monkeys. On asking about the monkeys present there they are encountered by a question, 'Do you know Hanuman?' by the local guide. Hanuman is the Hindu God, a greatest of warriors an possessing many powers. Lord Hanuman is better known for His devotion along with the warrior powers he had. On asking does the monkeys had some relevance with the fighters of Lop Buri? Yes comes the reply, he says, "It means, Lop Buri fighters can fight as fast as monkdeys, there movements are very dangerous the same as Hanuman.

Both them asks them if they can learn a technique as a fight with professional Thai Champion is coming up. They are shown the technique uf upper cut with both the fists that they called Hanman style. To execute this move the fighter moves inside or the opponent with both his fists placed under the opponent's chin and explode with the upper strike with both the fist under his opponents chin, a soft vulnerable area. Again a short video tutorial with animation is show for the double fist upper cut.

Next they travel to Sara Buri, famous for producing good Thai fighters. Where they are suppose to train under a repute and distinguished Muay Thai trainer. They are given a room to stay where they find that the sleeping bed was not a bed, but a mat, a part of training.

In the ring they demonstrate the Hanuman technique they learned from Lop Buri and asked the trainer if they could use that technique in the ring. "No", comes the answer, they are shown a counter move the flying knee, which looks more like a Hanuman Move than the double fist uppercuts they where shown. As Lord Hanuman had the power to fly and a flying knee attack would look more like a Hanuman move to someone like me who has studied much about Lord Hanuman. In fact the flying knee attack can be used as a follow up with a double elbow push, a very effective and devastating technique indeed. A video tutorial with computerized animation graphics is given again for the flying knee attack. Jason Chamber and Bill Duff exchange few sparring rounds with the fighters of the training camp.

Next Jason Chamber and Bill Duff travel to the dangerous jungles on the Burmese jungles. They fell like they are into a Ninja camp when they reach there. The master there Kru Preang is asked whether the Muay Thai techniques taught in the jungle military camps and the techniques which we see when two Muay Tahi fighters use in the rings. Kru Prang replies, "The Tahi boxing now a days that you see in the ring sport, they only took a little part of us. It's washed out to almost nothing, nowadays. Most of our technique, you know is used to harm a person, to take them down so fast. That's a battlefield fighting. The first thing they learned here was, 'A good defense makes a great offense.' The master further in the video after a demonstration of defense and offense states, 'In the ring sport, when the person punch and you try to move back, and you try to return a punch, it's to late." The master is obviously not with the Muhammad Ali movements, straight away get in, not to back off and hit. The Muay Thai fighters demonstrate few techniques and they look very fast in their techniques.

A small part of Thai history is narrated to them at the night camp fire.

I will tel you about small part of Thai History. Two Hundred or some more years ago. A farmer from Sing Buri gets captured by the Burmese. They took him to Burma and made a slave out of him. History say he perform ancient Thai Boxing and can knock off ten Burmese boxers in front of Burmese King. He used his Mae Mai Muay Thai to knock them off. And he can knock each Burmese boxer with a single strike. They called him Nai Khanom Tom, the Thai fighter. After winning his fights Nai Khanom was release by the Burmese king. He returned and spent his life teaching the art of Muay Thai. He became known as 'Father of Muay Thai' and really Muay Thai is the most famous sport of Thailand today.

Next day the master is seen Tai Chi style practice on the rock and Jason Chamber and Bill Duff joins him.

The fifth and the last part. Jason and Bill are taught the Thai Boxing in traditional methods. Kicking the banana trees trunk with the shin to toughen the shin. Hanging lemons to improve the accuracy. chop the waters in the river, and practice meditation to clear their minds.

Jason the MMA fighter relates his experience of the tour so far. He says that he feels like a piece of meat, getting beaten by everyone, getting use to the environment and the fighting techniques they use. Running uphill in the forests, he says training is not fun here. Both seems to get and learn a lot from this trip.

After the tough and productive training in the jungle, it's now time for one of these to put against the test and risk of fighting a real fight with a Muay Thai champion. They travel to Pattaya.

Jason is chosen to take on the challenge, far from home and fighting in a new environment and new fighting style make him a little nervous even though he has been part of professional fighting. An ambulance awaits if any of the fighter gets seriously injured.

Time for the real bout of Jason with the Muay Thai champ. The bout starts with traditional ritual. The movements represents the fighter honoring his camp of training. The fighters also bow to the four corners of the ring to honor the four noble truths of Buddha.

The fight starts and the strategy of Jason was to get closer to the fast opponent so that his fast kicks could be avoided and knee or elbow attacks could be delivered. Jason finds that getting closer to a fast fighter is easier said than done. His opponent was too fast, every time Jason tried to get close he was pushed away with a low push kick. The out last for three rounds, the Thai fighter did not meant business as it was not an official fight. The journey ends with much learning.
<!--

Training for any Martial arts form like Taekwondo, Karate, KungFu or combat sports like boxing, kick boxing, Muay Thai or MMA. The speed is a very important accept of training. Lot of beginners or even advanced trainees, strive too much for power in their punches and kicks or any other combat movement like grappling or take downs.

In the pursuit of power they forget or neglect the more important aspect the speed. In fact it is the speed that gives power or it is the speed that brings about more damage. I always give example of why a bullet shot from a gun brings more damage than a car moving at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour. It is the speed that brings damage . So speed is equal to power or greater the speed more the damage.

Yet the speed has to be executed with the proper technique that brings about the power. Punching or kicking just with the hand or leg, with speed does not serve the purpose. They have to be executed with proper techniques that bring about power, using the whole body behind the punch or kick. While punching it is not only the hands that punch, but the shoulders, the hips and the thighs that participates. While executing say the right punch, the body has to be divided in two parts left and the right. To bring the maximum power to the punch while punching with the right hand, the left shoulder and left hip has to be pushed back which gives much help to the right shoulder and hips that are push forward.

I always tell student that while punching not to think as the hands are punching but the shoulders and the hips are punching, the hands are the extension and the weapons used for punching. Same goes for the kicks.

There is also a another plus point for the speed. It is very difficult to judge the oncoming attacks for the opponent when the techniques are delivered with speed, apart from the damage they inflict on the opponent.

There is one more important aspect of speed the techniques when trained on punching bag, speed targets or in air has to be practiced with speed and multiple attacks also shown in the video. When techniques are practiced in that manner, they come out when in sparring or the bout. This helps to setup the opponent for a clean hit with a punch or a kick. Most of the time it is very difficult to get your opponent with a clean hit with a single technique. A combination of fast moving punches and kicks is needed for the same.

Few more tips i take care of while training or giving the lessons to the students on speed.

Don't think that a punch or kick is over when it reaches the target. For example the left jab or a round house kick when executed in practice should not be considered over while practicing in air, bag or target pads. The punch or the technique should be considered complete, when the punch or kick reach it's target and come back. To elobrate more on this, suppose we are executing a left jab. The left jab should not be considered over as it reaches the target, but has to be snapped back from where it started, with the same speed. This brings us back into a attentive position and ready for another technique. Many students throw a kick consider it over when the kick reaches the target, the speed is given up and the leg drops. Huge mistake. The kick has to be snapped back, the heel comes near the thighs with the same speed, bringing us back in a much stable stance from where we can defend or attack. If it is not done while the leg is dropping, our body is in no way a stable or attentive position, leaving it an easy target for opponents attack, forget about the follow up attacks with another punch or a kick.

Some comments on you tube for this video

Your videos are freaking awesome , I've been looking for instructionals like these forever, these have really helped me. The martial art is performed in Kalari and has the combat art of hand and feet, and with the weapons. Below are some videos from you tube.

In the modern Martial Arts this is the one which amazes me most and which has impressed me the most. More than the arts i have practiced and popular arts like Karate and commercialized combat styles like Muay thai, kick boxing, MMA, boxing. Simply because it demands more than just physical practice, requires perhaps the most dedication not just in the practice of techniques but also other aspects like massage with therapeutic oils, prayers, meditation and more.

Below posted by BalB , he says about the video : 7 minutes of some amazing Martial Arts by my friends in Kerala, South India. It's from a very, very rough video - remember those? filmed by one camera at a time, so picture quality is rough. But you should be able to geta feel for the martial art form itself.

For the video clip below mmanoba has lots to say : Kalari is a very tiny and surviving fragment of ancient Indian martial art called 'Varma Kalai'. Varma is the mother of all martial arts which spread across Asia through Hinduism and Buddhism.

Proof:
1) Similarities could be found in Chinese, Tibetan, Sri Lankan, etc. dance, music, martial arts with Indian arts. E.g. Therukootthu, Kathakali (flamboyant facial make-ups), Kerala Chenda drums, the rhythm all are adopted in China, Tibet, Japan and other south-eastern countries in the form of Lion, Dragon dances' flamboyant decorations, drums, rhythm, etc.
2) Similarities could be found between martial arts and Mudras (symbolic gestures) of yoga & Indian classical dances, and their movements. Probably dance, martial arts and yoga all might have evolved at the same time along with music, meditation, etc. They share the common property of being melodic.

There are several categories in Varma: NOkku (vision) Varmam, Thattu Varmam (deals with treatments and defense based on vital points), Chandra (moon) Varmam, Surya (sun) Varmam, usage of weapons on vital points, Varma treatments for animals, etc. In local tongue often Varma is called as "Marma", which may not be correct. The word "Varma" doesn't have a Sanskrit origin as in "Varn(m)a - color". Varumam in Tamil means vital points (there are other meanings too).

These techniques are extensively developed by Siddhas (well known for their Ayurvedic and alchemy works), who dwelt in mountains of South India, especially Tamil Nadu. Even today, there are legends around Courtralam, Suruli, Pazhani and Nilgiri hills, which speak about surviving Siddhas till date, who have eventually achieved longevity through their knowledge in Ayurveda, alchemy, meditation, etc.

Sadly, many of these techniques are lost due to the Guru's fear of misuse on co-species (as we humans are notorious for turning any scientific works, bar none, into weapons of destruction), and thus they refused to transfer the knowledge to others, including to their own descendants. This happened particularly, when Buddhism turned into political movement and the Buddhists started to learn these arts for their political gains.

However tiny fragments of Varma survived in the form of literature, mainly Tamil & Malayalam, and got the attention of Gurus in Kerala, a small state in south India, arround ~15-17th centuries, and became Kalarippayattu. This famous traditional training of Kalari of Kerala, is always done inside the Kalari (literally, threshing floor or battlefield), which is a specially constructed practice area. Payattu means 'exercise in arms or practice'.

A few centuries back in Kerala, quarrels between local kings were resolved by fixing an Ankam (war), a duel to the death, between two Ankachekavars (kalari fighters), each ruler being represented by one Ankachekavar. The ruler represented by the surviving Ankachekavar was considered the winner

Below : A documentary shot by the Discovery Channel in the 90s. Legend traces the 3000-year-old art form to Sage Parasurama- the master of all martial art forms and credited to be the re-claimer of Kerala from the Arabian Sea. Kalaripayattu originated in ancient South India. Kung- fu, popularized by the monks of the Shoaling Temple traces its ancestry to Bodhi Dharma - an Indian Buddhist monk and Kalaripayattu master.

Crafted in ancient South India drawing inspiration from the raw power and sinuous strength of the majestic animal forms - Lion, Tiger, Elephant, Wild Boar, Snake, and Crocodile ........ Kalaripayattu laid down the combat code of the Cholas, the Cheras and the Pandyas. Shrouded in deep mystery and mists of secrecy Kalaripayattu was taught by the masters in total isolation, away from prying eyes.

Following the collapse of the princely states and the advent of free India - Kalaripayattu has lost its significance as a mortal combat code. In a Phoenix-like resurrection, Kalaripayattu is today emerging in a new avatar - an ancient art form - a source of inspiration for self-expression in dance forms - both traditional and contemporary, in theatre, in fitness and in movies too.

India Martial art - Kalaripayattu Part-01

India Martial art - Kalaripayattu Part-02

India Martial art - Kalaripayattu Part-03

India Martial art - Kalaripayattu Part-04 END

visit you tube : http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GRTYgJ6I6zM&feature=user as Embedding disabled by request

Some comments form the you tube

* kalari. is freaking. amazing. live weapons?! that's alot of bravery and calmness of mind. amazing.

* Thanks 4 posting this one! Just Love Kalari..best martial art on Earth! We Hindus are blessed with great gurus who are able to pass this great artdown to us. Jai Hind! Jai Bhavani!

* on 3,20 min they said that this exercise is unique to kalary, nis not true, some kung fu like chin na exist a very similar exercise os kinf of push ups jumping

reply : It was an Indian Budhist monk "Bodhidharman" who took Kalari to China... he was the one who started the Shaolin temple ! Pls google- Shaolin Kungfu!

* UFC is by no means real, get a clue. Even with the best endurance in the world, any of those fights would end prematurely should dangerous strikes and holds be allowed again in there.

* in the video game Tekken 6 (comes out in 2007)

Zafina, a new female character from india, will fight using

Kalaripyattu

She frickin amazing

* If you check it out, Kerali focuses on extreme flexibility, strength, and speed. To be able to defend and go back on the offensive within a very short time span. Its pretty cool.

* I'm pretty sure that the bendy sword is rather unique to kalaripayattu. as for blocking, the only real way to do it is with a shield. If you use a weapon, it'll just wrap around it and strike you like that.

* I think European and the Middle East had a separate branch of fighting based from Egypt, Arabia, Persia, Greece, and Rome. Where as Bodhidharma from India went to the monks of China and taught them how to smoke ganja, meditate, and fight (kalaripatattu to kung fu).....because kung fu styles could be taught to the people which is a custom Indians passed to China who only trained the elites.

* Please help!
Where do yo have this video from? I own a book which i got years ago where exactly this interview with the indian master is featured. I would really like to know the name of the film or see more of it!

* This is one of the most primitive forms of self defence and attack known to mankind. Kalaripayattu masters know the weakest points on a human body and they realise that a quick dab on one of those points can either dibilitate the opponent or kill them. Itseems it takes under 20secs for a Kalaripayattu master to paralyse his opponent by tapping a specific point on the body and only he or someone who knows Kalri points well can release it!!! Isnt that amazing??

* Really good history of the Art.
The female fighter is very good.
The fight sequences are incredible

* i agree, the combatants are fighting and blocking at full speed without knowing where the next attack is coming from

amazing
i wanna learn

* Hindu pushups and Hindu squats. When i started wrestling in north america our coach said that too many people train like body builders and power lifters with the weights so mainly our coach thats all he wanted us to do with hindu pushups, hindu squats and bridging exercises. Even many russian wrestler abandone the weight rooms.

* Tamils were given Kalari by Parasuram. Then a Tamil gave it to the Chinese.

* No, there aren't. And there wont be. There's a few videos showing their training which, if you look closely , aren't preplanned. It just looks that way from the sheer speed of their reflexes.
But no, there is not and hopefully never will be a video of someone using Kalari against a true opponent.

* Bullshit, theyre the mother to no martial arts. I've studied Chinese, japanese, vietnamese, thai, malaysian, korean, plains, south american, hawaiian, german, french, greek, russian, british, angolan, nigerian martial arts theyre all different from eachother the only ones that could compare to indian martial arts are other miditian arts such as persian, egyptian, arabian, etc.

* Bodhidarma also introduced the healing art of Varma Cuttiram and herbal medicines from the Tamil country which evolved into Acupuncture, Tai Chi Chuan, Qi Gong, and Chinese medicine of today.

* plus, saying that Muay Thai works and TKD does not contradicts your other point where you said all martial arts are the same, they just have different names

* kalaripayattu is awesome.

*
<!--

These are most of the things i've based this list on. Enjoy the greatest knockouts the sweet science has given us.

This is by no means an OFFICIAL top 10, it's still an opinion and you can add yours. There's no way everybody can agree with 1 list.

He is probably right looking at whooping near to 1000 comments that the video gets on utube, so many minds so many views, overall it's good information from so many boxing lovers.

Now some comments from boxing lovers on this video

* the buster douglas knockout should definitely be on there. before that nobody even came close to beating tyson and that knockout was significant because it was all downhill from there on out for tyson. plus, he did get knocked the **** out pretty good

* (historical signifigance)how could chavez taylor not be here and roy jones was in that lame ass didnt even put up a fight? either way, cool vid

* No offense I thought most of em sucked.

* i like the insturmental. is it phil collins????????????

* no ALI? no TYSON? WHAT!

* plus george forman had a fight before and knocked some guy off of him feet with a uppercut and knocked hmi clean out?

* lol....tyson and buster douglas should not of been on here...obviously you've never seen tyson versus francois botha, tyson was well past his prime and still demolished him with the one punch knockout everyone knows tyson posseses, to be quite honest this video is almost there, just watch sopme early tyson and you will c better knock outs....peace

* Nice. The songs the drumming gorilla thing

* Rocky was the best only one heavyweight never been down - cool clip

* no Ali?

replies : never really had one amazing looking knockout despite all those wins.

Ali vs. Foreman!!?? Rumble in the jungle!! one of the most surprising, historic, and significant knockouts in the history of boxing!!

Prime Lewis vs. Prime Tyson = Lewis!!!

* Thanks Turk. Prety good list. I hate seeing the clip where Iron Mike goes down though...that was of the beginning of the end of a legend

* #4 is Julian Jackson KO Herol Graham
#2 is Tommy Hearns v Duran
#9 is Tyson Michael Spinks

* I have are some questions...

10. Roy Jones vs Montell Griffit
9. Mike Tyson vs Who???
8. Lenox Lewis vs Who???
7. Joe Walcott vs Ezzard Charles
6. Who??? vs Who???
5. James Buster Douglas vs Mike Tyson
4. This is Sugar Leonard? vs Who???
3. Floyd Patterson vs Who?? (Ingemar Johansson?)
2. Sugar Ray Leonard? vs Roberto Duran
1. Rocky Marciano vs Jersey Joe Walcott

* #6 is Sugar Ray robinson Vs. Gene fullmer. That really deserves to be #1. That punch is widely regarded as the "picture perfect punch", or the greatest and most perfect punch ever thrown. Ray robinson is also regarded as the greatest p4p fighter who ever lived. Gene Fullmer had an iron chin from High Hell and had never been knocked down before that fight.

* I'm no expert on boxing (have been getting into it heavily for the 2 years) but I love #6. I can only imagine what it must have been like to see the current and seemingly indestructible champion Fullmer get knocked out with a "picture-perfect" hook by a much older Robinson. That's just too classic.

* thanx for the post great midi and video

* number 3 should of been number 1 personally but pretty accurate list :)

* for me, the best KO ever was

Muhammet ALI vs Georg Foreman

* frasier vs ali 1, round 15, frasiers left hook knock down. got to be there somewhere. cleanest punch i have ever seen. but "the greatest" did get up so don't know if that counts

Reply : yes i still wonder how Ali got up after receiving that blow. Awesome that tells the story of great ability of taking the punishment of the all time greatest

* listen to this shyte.
as if age has anything to do with ability to fight.
Leonidas was in his 60's at thermophylae.
oh but you thought it's all in the muscle...a great example of why ignoramouses should keep their mouth shut and dueling should be made legal again. i'm sure chavez is great at what he does. but he's a "super feath light weight". I know over a dozen guys who can knock him out...

* j.c chavez world champ at super feafther light weight and light welter brilliant fighter if you know anything about boxin then you should know him as for marciano all the people he beat were old e. charles 37 ,j. louis was about 38 and archie moore was well in his 40s,marciano was a cruiserweight if he was around today he only ever weighed about 13 and a half stone i ,ali tyson foreman lewis holyfield the list goes on him they would have destroyed him,

* Rocky was a heavy weight dude, I'm pretty sure he'd knock out this Chavez who ever he is.

* That's right..Rocky Marciano the greatest boxer ever..49-0

* Awesome, but where's Ali?

* Right!! where is ALI ALI ALI!

* number 3 was one beutiful punch

* NICE video man! marciano is a great fighter but Ali is the best !!!! and Avery dont be jealous he is who he is so thats it he was a great fighter if u like it or not

* marciano,unbeatable

* Marcianos fights were fixed by the mob. He sucked!!

* these guys are all just chuck norris in disguise.

* hey this chuck norris facts thing is old so quit your shit

* yeh Hearns, duran best bfight ever.

* how do you not even put ali over foreman on the list at all?

* i agree with shurikan, the most significant knockout of all time left out.

* Thats Rocky Marciano

* Herol 'Bomber' Graham. Such a shame. One of the best boxers never to become a world champ.

* Roy Jones JR. is the most exiting boxer you could ever wtch in your life soon i will give directions of where to buy the career collection:)

* Where in the hell is ali knocking foremans ass out?

* Number 3 has to be one of the most powerful left hooks ive seen from an orthodox fighter. Great vid mate and love the music :)

* You should've added Ali Vs Foreman or Lewis Vs Tyson

* last uppercut on #5 drugs tyson.

* 5 IS ******* AMAZING

* number 4 was perfecT!!!

* Yo number 3 was sick!!!! Johansson's feet were twitching went he was out cold!!

* Rocky was the best

* Rocky was the best

* i love these choices but no ali? no joe louis? i agree with about 4 or 5 of them tho. the joe louis vs max shemling should be up there.and rumble in the jungle. and a jack johnson fight

* Great choice, nice to see Lewis Rahman 2 in there.

* Glad to see you got one of Julian Jacksons knockouts up and the Hearns-Duran too!
Not that many folks know about Julian "The Hawk" Jackson. At one time he sported a 98% knock out rate for years. The knockout of Buster Drayton and Terry Norris are in the 50 knockouts of all time!

* marcianos ko came like a bolt from the blue, no setup whatsoever (and he needed it), whereas tyson was absorbing punishment prior to the ko, which comprised about 10 unanswered punches. #1 was truly historic and dramatic.

* great vid, #1 was right on !

* i agree with the number one they reckon that was the hardest punch ever thrown in boxing history

* tito's knockout of vargas was sick...so was nwodo being knocked out last yr...pretty good selection tho...also foremans ko of frazier shud've made it....

* Hey Btw again Awesome Video I agree with the Rocky being #1 =)!

* Great Video I think you should post some videos of some New fighters KO I Think the first Kelly Pavlik vs Jermain Taylor was one of the Best comebacks in Boxing history Kelly is a True Champion

* i think Chavez Taylor was the best of all

* I'm fairly certain that was Sugar Ray Robinson knocking out Gene Fullmer.

* You honestly think that Lewis/Rahman 2 was better than 1? Lewis was hit with a clean, solid and powerful uppercut that put him down in one shot. And, it fits in your criteria for knockouts. Rahman became a househld name for a short time after that punch. You may want to rethink #8. IMO

* best ko is when mohamad ali ko goerge foreman 1

* i like the way you put the video together, well done indeed. i do however feel you could have replaced some of those KO's with different ones. darnell wilson-vs-emmanuel nwodo, nonito donaire-vs-vic darchynian, vincent pettway-vs-simon brown...all could have made the list over a few you got now, but i dont mean to hate, i like that u have some of the classic one like walcott-charles... that was devastating! check out the ones i listed, you being a KO lover you will like them. thanks for posting

* Well, the Ali-Foreman has a few negative factors about it. Everyone knows that Foreman was more 'out' because he was exhausted, so that scraps away devastation and fame(famous for being a knockout, not victory) which are IMO the most important. Also, imo Duran was a bit past prime, but he was never KO'd before and certainly not like that. Hearns was the only one capable of doing that to Duran.
Anyhow, you have the right to criticize, because even I see some flaws about this list today lol.

replies : well, lets see, if you say that then its more an argument of which is the more POPULAR knockout which makes the catagories you listed - "Skill, Devastation, Historical Signifigance, Fame, Adversity, Quality of opponent, a clean ko without multiple knockdowns" seem false. dont get me wrong, i love your vid.

Thank you. I respect your opinion, but you are reffering to a Top 10 Victories list, not a pure Top 10 Knockouts list.
I never hear anyone ever say anything about the Ali-Foreman KO. "You remember that right hand Ali finished Foreman with?" You don't hear any of that. It was a great combination, though

* i've always liked when Tyson knocked out Spinks, but the greatest is the Marciano Walcott knockout

* you need to watch sugar ray's perfect punch if anyone has ever seen it!! I dont know why its not on there!!

* Great work man.. Nice list. Two knockouts that I would have added for sheer significance would be Hagler vs Hearns and Ali vs Foreman. But as you say it's totally subjective.. A great list Turk!

* You forgot Joe Frazier??? His incredible left hook knockdown againts Ali should have been a top 5

* great video man, you should make one with body-punch KOs now, ;)

* If you want knockouts of historical significance how about Ali KOing Liston? For sheer power, where is Foreman beating the shit out of frazier?

* Muhammad Ali was big fast and can take the best of punches. Ali never was laid off for 3 and half years from boxing and came back to capture the title. Before his title taking from him he was untouchable. Louis, Marciano was to small and slow for Ali.

* Where is the MUHAMMAD ALİ?

* I love UFC but boxing will always have my heart =0)

* in my opinion ufc is better than boxing because the knock outs are more brutal and they actually go out cold, not just woozy and can't stand up, OUT COLD!

* Maybe that's because the guy that goes down gets an extra free-shot pounding on his cranium AFTER he's out cold already. These men can create the same effect with 1 punch, and can't dontinue to pound when they're down already.
In my opinion that's what makes me like MMA less. Great sport, but the knockouts have no honor. Boxing has better punch-KO's, and K-1 has better kicks as well.

* hell yeah well deserved first place for the rock. although i was dissapointed there was no ali.

* Arche Moore was a veteran of 100 or more fights by the time he fought Marciano and was essentially a light-heavyweight

reply : Yes, Fight and beat. Rocky knocked out Ezzard Charles twice, Joe Louis and Archie Moore. All Hall of famers. And everyone says he beat an old Louis but in Rockys last fight when he was well out of his prime he beat a prime Archie Moore. You have to be able to fight at a high level until the end to be the greatest.

* Come on guys Ali would have danced and jabbed his way all over Mariciano especially in his prime. I don't even think Mariciano could beat Joe Frazier or Holmes. But you can't compare Era's you can only fight the people they put in front of you. But Mariciano was a great champ and I don't think you can say 1 champ is better than any other unless they fought against each.

* You muppet! Listen to what you are saying.. In those days there were loads of dodgy dealings going on, esp with the Mafia. many talented black fighters were not given the chance to fight for world titles in those v.racist times, same shit in Jack Dempsey's day 1920s, that's why he had title so bloody long! Todays world is more FREE & open, TRUE talent can rise to top. As for pills, weights etc, if it was that easy FRANK BRUNO would be one of the GREATS! Nah, your argument is crap,

* Marciano was fighting when guys didn't even know what a weight room was and had no idea that health is important for boxing.
<!--

It was his Super Hit movie "Enter the Dragon", the popular movie made Bruce Lee and Matial Arts, popular throughout the world. It was like a wave which took most people interested in this combat art of hand and feet.

Bruce Lee, was a multi talented icon. He was a Martial Artist, an actor, a philosopher, instructor and founder of a revolutionary Martial Art called Jeet Kune Do, which originated in 1965. It was after a fight in competition that Bruce Lee felt that the traditional Wing Chun technique were too rigid. He decided to develop a system with an emphasis on "practicality, flexibility, speed, and efficiency". He started to use different methods of training such as weight training for strength, running for endurance, stretching for flexibility, and many others which he constantly adapted.

Jeet Kune Do was not only the fighting style, Bruce Lee considered but a philosophy, Bruce Lee emphasized, "the style of no styles".

Bruce Lee was also trained in Boxing and Western fencing techniques

<!--

Not just ultimate fighting but perhaps in any contact sports, if not the fastest it has to be one of the fastest knockout in the history of contact sports.

The time it takes for the knockout in this video clip is less than the time taken for the first blow delivered in the most competitive contact sports, fought n the ring, at any level. Funny or sad, i don't which way to say it, the knockout happens even before the commentator, completes his first sentence, would any body believe it? perhaps not, watch the video clip to believe it!

The fighter in the right shorts with strips one of the two fighters from Chris Clements and Lataro Lucas, runs towards the opponent, he runs without the attention on his opponent. Thats the reason how important is Training with a partner, is so much important.

Actually this kind of rushing can be used very effectively, as it gives much more power to your punch, due to the momentum of the body which is moving in. I have seen Muhammad Ali, applying this technique in some of his fight, when his opponent has been knocked down and is recovering with the ten counts. Muhammad Ali starts moving in towards his opponent with the eight count, realizing that his opponent is in no good shape. The way Muhammad Ali moves is quiet different, than the dumb move we see in this video. Muhammad Ali's eyes are always watching his opponent, not just when moving in for a kill, all the time he fights. His right hand would be in the position to deliver the strongest of punch, as there is no need for the left jabs to set the opponent for a strong right. And he delivers the right punch first, followed with a fury of fast combination of the punches, for the KO.

Inspired by his videos even i had used this technique effectively, in the times i competed in boxing and kick boxing. If this technique is utilized at right time, with attention on opponent, after judging his strength or perhaps weakness in this case, it is a sure winner.

Here the knocked down opponent does almost all the possible error one can do, causing and instant embarrassing knock down in the seconds, after the bell rings.

First his opponent is all fresh, he was not expecting such a move all he had to do was deliver a right punch right on the face and the momentum of his opponent body does the rest.

Second he is moving too fast than needed, almost sprinting and third even his hands are moving in the way as if he is sprinting for a hundred meters dash. God, how he entered the ring at that competitive level. Left hand should be stretched out to keep your opponent away and the right held behind his shoulder for maximum impact.

All that he has done here should be strictly avoided, running too fast in, hands waving down and most important where is his attention. He runs blindly, when neat his opponent he pays attention to his opponent, realize that he has moved away, tries to stop but cannot due to his very fast speed of running in, and as he tries to stop gets a good clean punch right on his face that puts him down.

It was a predetermined move, determined that he will catch the opponent in the corner, and the opponent moves a little bit away, now this is one big mistake. Never ever predetermine in a fight, just put your attention on your opponent's moves and the trained body respond.

<!--

It has a slide show of picture for the Kydojo. These are beautiful pictures of the practitioner of the archery, not a popular form of Martial Arts in terms of the number of individual practicing. But still one can see the nice setup of the classes.

What strikes most form the pictures is the centered state of the practitioners. It can be seen even in the pictures. The attention within. The robes they wear, the gears they use everything looks so neat, tidy. The discipline. The video along with the good images has a wonderful Japanese music added to it.

Looking at this video I could remember a Zen Story, which points to the essence of Martial Arts. The Zen Story if i remember right is called the art of archery.

i will narrate the story as i remember.

There was an archer. He was dedicated to art and could shoot at the target as no one did. He was on the target every time and never missed a target. He went to the king and asked the king to announce him the best archer in the country.

The king replied that he would certainly do that provided he competes with and old master living in the hills and comes back.

The archer, in hurry to get the title of the best archer for what he had worked so hard, started his journey in the direction, where the Old Master lived. After few days of journey he reached the destination.

He approached the Old Master and told him the reason of his visit to him.

'Come with me' said the Master and the archer followed him equipped with his bow and arrows. Ready to shoot at any given target.

The Master guided him to the edge of deep valley, half of his feet held on the ground and half in the air above the deep valley. The master took the shooting position with his bow and arrow and persuade the archer to join him.

As the archer went near the valley, his hands started trembling, it was difficult for him, even to stand, as his legs and body was trembling with fear. Even lifting the bow was not possible.

He went away quietly. The essence of Martial Arts is not in perfecting techniques, but to win over the fear. The fear that self has.

If you have like the video, there are some more on you tube from the same source

<tr He is also known as "Hyper Battle Cyborg" or "The Bulldog of Normandy".

Jerome Le Banner teaches, blocking the punches and low kicks in this video clip. He starts with the blocking of punches which are thrown in boxing, kickboxing or Muay Tai style. There are various styles of blocks and dodging for attacks from punches and kicks.

While teaching Taekwondo, Khan Do Kwan or kick boxing, i notice many beginners or amateur fighter's reaching too far away to block a punch or kick. This is perhaps normal human tendency as almost all beginners tend to do so. Here the professional kick boxing fighter demonstrates how the punches should be blocked. Just a little movement of hands close to own body. Not reaching too far out, thus exposing the face and body for other attacks. Other thing happens when one reaches far out for a block is that one loses body balance is not completely ready for a next move, may be defensive or attacking move. And there are so many ways to block a single kind of attack. Jerome Le Banner, just shows that. In the fighting situation the body responds to any of the trained block. Important thing 'NOT TO REACH OUT FAR WITH A BLOCK AND MAINTAIN YOUR OWN BODY BALANCE', body and mind should always be in an active and balanced state to deliver an attack or make a defensive move.

Some of the blocks are designed in such a way that they help in a counterattack. One learns this while training with a partner as shown in the video.

Other important thing the beginners seems to much is dodging. I have notices that the beginners when put in sparring drills or when they enter a competition, they are too occupied with the defense , that too the wrong way as stated above, and they never or seldom try to move a little bit away from the attacks or dodge them. I love watching the Muhammad Ali's fights, where his attention on opponent's body is always and how he moves a bit away from most of the powerful attacks. Another champion fighters that i noticed using this technique a lot are Genki Sudo and Serkan Yilmaz. So moving away or dodging just enough to avoid the attack is one very important fighting technique, which has to be developed by training with a partner, where the students awareness and awakeness and attention on opponents moves is much required with the body moving for attacking kicks and punches or defensive moves.

This two techniques are very important in boxing as well as all Martial Arts forms like Khan Do Kwan, Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, MMA, UFC, Muay Thai ............

Next Jerome Le Banner demonstrates various styles of blocks to the low kicks. Low kicks are not used in many fighting sports like Boxing, Taekwondo and Karate, however are widely and effectively used in Muay Thai and Kick boxing and MMA.

To summarize this kind of training with a partner. One has to stay focused always, always attentive and remain in a balanced position. This gives a huge upper edge towards the kicking and punching techniques practiced in air or on punching bags or targets. However these training has it's own importance, and one must go through them making their punching and kicking techniques better before the training drills with a partner.

Another important thing to note in this video is to train with proper gears for safety.

<!--
